NEWS FROM SCOTLAND

NEW POLL ON SCOTTISH NATIONAL ANTHEM

Football (SOCCER in the Colonies) fans have been polled and selected Flowers of Scotland as their choice for a National Anthem. It is loudly sung at most football fans.

The poll was taken at the request of a Scottish Parliament Committee.

Fifty-six percent of respondents voted for Flowers over Scotland the Brave, Caledonia, and 500 Miles.

UPDATE: Government says "No National Anthem" just now!

Scotsman, 16 February 2015

Flowers will not be designated as THE National Anthem. Flower of Scotland won’t be made national anthem despite support among soccer fans. Instead, the Government wants any choice to have “broad” support.

GREAT TAPESTRY OF SCOTLAND

Billed as the “longest” in the world, the Great Tapestry of Scotland has moved to Stirling Castle.

The Tapestry is a true ‘people’s” project and involved over a 1,000 volunteers who created 160 hand-embroidered panels to tell the story of Scotland and its Peoples.

BOARD MEETS SCOTTISH SCHOLAR

At his request, the Board met on July 21st with Dr Duncan Sim, a Reader in Sociology, of the University of the West of Scotland in Perth.

This was a research visit as Dr Sims is continuing work following publication of his 2011 book - American Scots: The Scottish Diaspora and the USA. A grand evening was enjoyed as we talked of what the Society does, how relationships with Scotland are viewed, and how the Scottish Government can strengthen ties with Scots worldwide.

Sim’s interest lies in study of how Scots who came to America maintain a degree of Scottish identity whether their connection is a long distant immigrant or a recent arrival. To some extent this can be seen in those who love Burns Dinners and Tartan events while others only are interested in a good Scottish band at a contemporary music festival.

For the Society, a number of program areas were identified to develop in the future. For example, this website now has a link to VisitScotland – the government’s official tourist portal.
