Welcome
to our website! You can learn about all the
exciting upcoming events along with some
Scottish history! We as members share a
common background , be it Scottish, English,
Welsh or Irish. I am your President of
the Scottish Society of Central
Pennsylvania. I was appointed a year ago to
serve as your president. I have enjoyed
planning, preparing and participating in our
events. I have been a member for over 20
years.
For
current members you can keep up to date and
join us with events planned. For potential
new members we look forward to having you join
our society and enjoying your heritage by
participating in entertainment , Scottish
games and meetings.
We have
five major events throughout the year.
Our year
starts out with the celebration of Robert
Burns. He was a very gifted Scotsman, poet
and artist at music lyrics. The celebration
is part of a dinner where we watch the Ode To
The Haggis ceremony, watch Scottish dancers,
and have singing entertainment. Then at the
end we join hands, form a huge circle and
sing Auld Lang Syne!
Next is
the Annual meeting held in April where we
enjoy a light meal and appoint new officers
and board members.
We have
a Kirkin' O' The Tartan ceremony at a church
in the area of Scottish Protestant origin
where we honor our Tartans, and heritage. We
also hear our bagpiper play and remember the
flowers of the field - the members who have
passed away during the previous year.
In June
is our premiere Pipes and Drums Festival that
is too good to miss! Bring a lawn chair to
enjoy free entertainment where you watch and
hear the ever inspiring bagpipes and
thundering drums from the Scottish Highland
marching bands. They compete for prizes as
they process across the open fields! We have
Scottish games with the Haggis throw and Caber
toss. Even the children can participate for
prizes! This year we will have sheep herding
and a petting zoo!
In
October we have our Fall meeting where we
enjoy a ham dinner. Members and guests bring
potluck food items. We have a quick update on
Society items and then entertainment. We
love listening to musical groups, or people
who have prepared presentations on a
particular historical event, person, craft or
trip.
Our
Society is anxious for you to join us as we
share and learn about our heritage. And we
get to have fun doing it!
